Power and Energy Society is one of the oldest societies of IEEE. IEEE PES SBC RIT officially came into existence in August 2017. The chapter has been very active since then and conducted numerous activities that benefit the member community. Today the society has members from all fields of engineering. With the combined efforts of teachers and students, it turned out to be the largest PES SB chapter both in regional and global positions. It also ranked 4th in membership count globally. PES SB has organized many technical, professional, developmental and social activities including weekly workshops, LED/Solar Kit workshops, Intercollege workshops and quiz contests for students and young professionals.
The Wheels of Progress event, organized on 16th April 2024, featured an inspiring experience-sharing session by Team Motorage. The team, known for their success in designing and building electric off-road vehicles for the E-Baja competition, shared their journey, strategies, and challenges. They highlighted their achievements, including overcoming technical hurdles and securing competitive rankings, while emphasizing the importance of teamwork and innovation. With 31 attendees, the session was highly motivational, offering valuable insights into applying academic knowledge to real-world projects. Participants found the session interactive, inspiring, and deeply engaging, making it a memorable and impactful event.
The PESQUIZINE, an online quiz competition organized by IEEE PES SBC RIT on 7th April 2024, celebrated PES Day with enthusiastic participation. The event aimed to test participants' knowledge and engagement in power and energy-related topics. Winners Hajara Raheed (S2 CS, RIT) and Akshay O R (S8 Mech, RIT) were recognized for their outstanding performance. Attendees appreciated the timely and well-coordinated event, making it a successful and engaging experience for all participants.
The EmpowerHer Photography Competition, organized by IEEE PES SBC RIT from 7th to 14th March 2024, celebrated Women’s Day by honoring the diverse experiences, achievements, and struggles of women worldwide through photography. Exclusively for girls, the competition encouraged participants to showcase their creativity and perspectives on womanhood. Entries were evaluated based on creativity, technical proficiency, composition, and storytelling. The winners, Megha Madhu and Sredha Sibichen (S6 EEE, RIT), were recognized for their impactful submissions. Attendees appreciated the event’s ethical evaluation process and seamless coordination, making it a meaningful celebration of women’s empowerment.
As part of AKPESSC'23, an industrial visit to the Electric Vehicle Centre of Excellence (EV CoE) occurred on October 27, 2023, educating delegates on EV maintenance, repair, and battery testing. Organized by IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, and hosted by IEEE SB RIT, the visit facilitated interaction with EV CoE staff, providing insights into electric vehicles. This interactive session highlighted challenges, competition, and market growth in the electric vehicle sector, offering valuable knowledge to participants.
The industrial visit to the KSEB 220kV substation, Ettumanoor, exposed students to transformers, control panels, relays, and circuit breakers, fostering curiosity for deeper learning. Explaining control panels, touring the distribution field, and showcasing the Gas-insulated substation provided precise details. Interaction with staff and executives offered insights into KSEB's operations and challenges. Attendees expressed satisfaction and deeper academic understanding and gained valuable insights into industrial workings.
The visit to the 220kV substation, KSEB Poovanthuruthu, provided valuable insights to the attendees. Assistant engineers guided the delegates through the 220kV, 66kV, and 11kV sections explaining the circuit breakers and various equipment. Delegates envisioned roles as Assistant Engineers, contributing to societal electricity needs. The visit offered an understanding of energy processing and protection schemes, igniting interest in electrical operations. Delegates enjoyed the substation visit, linking theory to practical applications and a commitment to renewable energy development.
The first talk session focused on addressing the urgent need for global action against climate change. Dr. Bindhu B K, Associate Professor, RIT Kottayam, facilitated the session, where she outlined the escalating impact on the environment, such as rising levels, increased temperature, and biodiversity loss. The session concluded with a call for immediate action and global cooperation to combat climate change effectively. Attendees found the session highly informative and motivating and gained a deeper understanding of the significance of individual and collective efforts in addressing this global crisis.
Dr. Rahul Satheesh, a renowned expert in the field of professional development, conducted an insightful session on the importance of networking, developing a comprehensive skill set, exploring internship opportunities, etc. The session emphasized the need for upskilling, providing attendees with tools to identify and learn relevant skills. Attendees appreciated the session's focus on practical aspects and the insights of the speaker left a lasting impact on participants, inspiring them to enhance their professional reach.
Mentor Mr. Adil Nasser, Professor, College of Engineering, Kidangoor, took a unique approach to engage the delegates by dividing them into smaller groups and assigning tasks of brainstorming about Sustainability. During the session, the speaker attentively listened to the findings of each group, summarized the discussion, and explained various ways in which sustainability can be achieved. The session helped to create a collaborative atmosphere and motivated the delegates to take action toward sustainability and spread awareness to their peers and community.
To introduce students to the principles and practical applications of ETAP, a workshop was organized as part of AKPESSC'23. Mentors, Dr. Vinod V, Associate Professor, Govt. Engineering College, Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram, and Prof. Roshan Alex, Faculty, MSigma Gokulam, played a pivotal role in imparting valuable insights and fostering an engaging learning environment. The workshop successfully equipped attendees with a foundational understanding of load flow analysis and its practical implementation using ETAP. The interactive nature of the session allowed diverse participants to engage and learn effectively, enhancing their comprehension of power systems.
In a workshop led by Mr. BV Suresh Babu, participants explored the vital intersection of Energy Engineering and the Environment. Covering thermodynamics to global environmental concerns, the session emphasized energy conservation and environmental protection. Dr. Ajith Gopi and Mr. Ananthu R. Krishnan led a workshop covering diverse areas, emphasizing solar energy's role in addressing energy poverty and remote power implementation. Demonstrating PV system software, notably PVSyst, they trained students in solar power system design. The workshop deepened understanding and offered hands-on experience, enabling participants to simulate a solar plant and generate detailed energy reports. Emphasizing the importance of a strong IEEE relationship for professional growth, the session highlighted research and networking opportunities. IEEE PES Chairs Meet 2023, organized as part of AKPESSC'23, gathered IEEE PES SBC Excom members from various colleges at RIT, Kottayam. Prof. Deepa A K and Er. Harikumar K P opened the session followed by a session on design by Mr. Sanjay P V and Ms. Shilpa Prasad. The YP Track was handled by Er. Hariprasad and Mr. Nithin V M. Excom members from various SBCs presented their activities, plans, and achievements, motivating others. The "Opportunities and Hurdles in AI-Centric Startups" event was a dynamic exploration of AI entrepreneurship. Led by Ms. Shalini V Nair, Founder of Ennoventure Inc., participants gained insights from her extensive AI startup experience. Success stories inspired, and discussions covered regulatory challenges, compliance, and ethics. Attendees engaged in a dynamic exchange of ideas with Ms. Shalini, and positive feedback highlighted the event's value for innovation and growth in the dynamic AI entrepreneurial space.
Facilitated by Prof. Jithin K Jose, the session empowered students to overcome inhibitions in their personal and professional lives. As Vice Chair of the Membership Development Committee at IEEE Kerala Section and Assistant Professor at JEC, Thrissur, Prof. Jithin K Jose shared insights and a roadmap for growth. Interactive activities fostered self-awareness, providing tools to tackle inhibitions confidently. Participants left inspired with practical strategies and a supportive community.
Resume Revamp was an online workshop, aimed to provide participants with the expertise to craft impactful resumes and boost their career prospects. The interactive session, guided by Mr. Vyasan J., offered attendees the chance to seek guidance on specific queries, thereby enriching the hands-on learning experience. Aligned with IEEE Day, the workshop emphasized its significance for the professional growth of young engineers.
As part of IEEE PES Day 2023 celebrations, IEEE PES SBC RIT hosted an online session on May 19, 2023, focusing on 'Renewable Energy Transformation'. Led by Er. Anil M., Secretary of IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, the session provided participants with a practical application of textbook knowledge. Attendees gained insights into how the generated renewable energy undergoes transformation and serves diverse purposes, seamlessly aligning with the theme of the event.
This online interactive session was conducted on 18th May, by IEEE PES SBC RIT along with IEEE PES Kerala Chapter and IEEE SB GECT as part of celebrating IEEE PES Day 2023. The session was handled by Dr. Ajith Gopi, Chair of the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter. The event aimed at providing different ideas to tackle the present situation of global warming and fight for a better future. Around 38 students actively participated in the event, gaining a clear idea of how to implement basic knowledge into a bigger view.
